The cemetery was part of the larger Bāb al-Baḥr Cemetery. In about 1000 AH the Bāb al-Baḥr Cemetery was extended to the North by the contribution of Shaykh Shaʿbān ('Shaykh Abī al-Qurūn'). Also a mosque was built there and Shaykh Shaʿbān as well as his successor were later buried in it. The famous mutaṣarrif of Gaza Ḥusayn Makkī Bāshā was buried here in the 18th century. At the peak of its extension it comprised an area of more than 60,000 sqm. However, Gatt in his map of 1887, attributed the name Shaykh Shaʿbān to the entire cemetery.- The Shaykh Shaʿbān cemetery and its mosque were demolished in the 20th century and the Arab Bank building was constructed there (Mubayyiḍ, 1995, p. 437).
